Yes, it means that this is the first movie in which he has appeared. This is his first film (at least on-screen, since he could have been a director, camera-man etc.).

JUst reflect
present perfect = before now
I have never skied (in my life)
I have never bungee jumped (in my life)
I have never heard that expression (before)
This all refers to before now
When you add 'before' or 'before now' you are intimating that now you have heard that expression, that now you are skiing or bungee jumping or on the verge of skiing or bungee jumping
or you may be on the verge of deciding not to bungee jump or ski.
I have never skied before and I have no intention of skiing
However: I have never heard that expression before - now I have heard it
So with 'befoe now' be led by the meaning of the sentence not just by the rules
