China Foreign Teachers have to pay double taxes - Bu Hao!

Unread post by Skyler »

Not only are expat TEFL and ESL teachers the lowest paid expats working in China, but the job agents will somehow "forget" to tell you that you must pay taxes in both your homeland and China! So,let's say you make $25,000 a year teaching in China. $6,000 goes to pay taxes in China and $4,000 back in America or Canada! Now just try to rent an apartment in Beijing or Shanghai without at least 1 or 2 roommates!

Everyone has to pay tax. China is not exceptional. My suggestion is that you tell the employer that your salary is after tax when you sign the contract. Without declaration on this, the employer can deduct tax from your salary. This is common in China.
