When you look at the ‘Jobs Discussion’ and ‘Jobs Discussion – Asia’ threads what are the first thing you notice? The answer is the amount of scams going on. It’s like a minefield.

Dig a little deeper and what you find is that the scams are all occurring in the private sector. Surely, both a correlation and a warning? That’s not to say that all in the private sector are scammers, but they are after all businesses and it does mean that if you’re chasing the money you better tread with care.

If you’re offered more than a qualified teacher in a first world society, from a business masquerading as a school with a basic TEFL certificate in a developing country, common sense should tell you it’s not going to happen.

In all my years in Asia, I never came across anyone employed part time as their main job. As a reputable school will pay at least a good share of your airfare and all the costs involved with residency and work permits, it wouldn’t be economically viable. Fifteen hours a week would mean three 45 minute or one hour classes a day. In your dreams! :)

If you haven’t got the qualifications, don’t go. There’s no rainbow pot of gold out there, or welfare and you will not be spending your time on sun drenched beaches with a pocketful of cash, as per the enticing adverts. You’re going to work, not for a holiday and there is nothing faintly exotic about working for any business, especially in Asia where labour laws are at a minimum and it’s still a master/servant relationship.

Think about what you’re doing before you fall for the promises, or if you have the qualifications stick to a state school that is actually a real school and has a reputaion to uphold.
