Re: Degree or no degree
I assume you mean the 120 hour TEFL, but no degree and no experience? Possibly with a shady recruiter, or in a little out of the way village and it’s almost a certainty you’ll be working illegally, so what you get will be entirely up to those who might hire you if they’re desperate and you have no c...

Re: Is Wall Street English Or China Racist - Or Both?
I have some bad news for you folks back in the west. The whole of Asia is racist, not just the schools. OK, wipe eyes, blow nose, deep sigh and get on with it? The diversity, equality and affirmative action is largely unknown outside the west. I DO work for a racist school here in China and worked f...

Re: 2015 Foreign Teacher Requirements & Qualifications
You’re welcome. I’d just like to add that wanting to jump into a profession immediately doesn’t really work that way. You don’t just sort of get in there and perform, if you get my meaning. Once that’s apparent to the school and it will be in about ten minutes, the salary will reflect that. The scam...

Re: Beware China foreign teachers - Resume Job Scam Is Costly!
Alas, the world is full of blame and I’ve never yet heard anyone say, ‘ it was my fault because I am/was an alcoholic ’, or ‘ I got to close to the student’s’ , or even, ‘ I signed the contract but didn’t think it was fair. ’ I’ve heard them all repeated and although I except there are more than a f...

Re: 2015 Foreign Teacher Requirements & Qualifications
‘Retail experience’ is not professional teaching experience and would probably do more harm than good on a resume. How about ‘Retail consultant’? Manual employment is looked down on throughout Asia. By 'experience', it's meant teaching experience. It’s true that China is desperate for teachers, pref...

Re: Writings about TEFL teaching
I recently started putting a few articles I've written over the last few years online, with more when I have the time. They concern the social and various aspects of TEFL teaching. Have a look if you're interested.

Re: I need the right advice...
Forget the courses, the expense and the various ‘must do’ advice. At the end of the day, you stand in front of a large group of teens or get their attention, or not. A verifiable minimum of a degree, clean criminal record and a TEFL will get you in at the bottom end and the experience you can get on...

Re: Beware China foreign teachers - Resume Job Scam Is Costly!
A few tips? Firstly, those who tend to fall for the scams are the gullible and/or, those without experience. Some logical questions, why would anyone pay you 20k ¥ for a few hours work a week? A quick look at job boards will inform you that the average Chinese salary ranges from 4k for a novice to a...
