Re: Non-native degree Teachers vs non-degree Teachers
The quality of a teacher's English and their training should definitely be prioritized over just having any degree. I completely agree that schools should focus on TEFL certification and language proficiency over arbitrary degree requirements. A passion for teaching English and proper teaching skill...

Re: Is high IQ necessary for languages?
Just wanted to echo what the others have said - don't worry too much about IQ. Having motivation and putting in lots of practice is really what matters most for language learning. Why don't you try that official IQ test if you're curious, but don't let a number discourage you. And I second the recom...

Re: torn between Taiwan and Korea
I'd say South Korea is the better option career-wise since you speak the language and have connections there. Laws aren't perfect but attitudes seem to be gradually changing, as articles like this show: https://eastasiaforum.org/2022/01/13/south-koreas-transgender-community-pushes-for-recognition-an...

Re: age discrimonation in TEFL in 2024
A few countries that tend to be more age-friendly for TEFL are Western Europe and Latin America. Places like Spain and Italy generally don't have strict age limits. Chile and Colombia are also good options in Latin America - they value experience over age. You may find public schools have limits but...

Re: What do you think of a part time teaching job and a business? - Need some advice
A few teacher friends of mine actually run small online tutoring businesses on the side. As long as she sets boundaries for her time, it could be a good fit while keeping costs low to run. Something like that or online translations might work well since she can fit sessions into her schedule.

Re: article on teacher shortage in South Korea
Yeah, it makes sense that pay is a big factor - if grads can find decent work at home, why go abroad for low wages? Vietnam having issues too doesn't help. Supply and demand, you know. Anyway, interesting points in the article - pays to consider all angles when choosing jobs overseas.

Re: Very Young Learners in Online Class
Some great suggestions from others here on keeping young kids engaged online. A couple more ideas that may help - try incorporating movement or songs into the lesson whenever you can, even if just getting them to stand up and stretch for a minute.Kids that age tend to fidget so anything physical can...

Re: Online teaching: The fallacy of making a quick buck
Thanks for the detailed perspective on online teaching. It definitely seems like the reality isn't as rosy as some of the marketing makes it out to be. It's good that you're pushing back on overly optimistic portrayals to help manage expectations. Working abroad still seems like a better option if s...

Absolutely! Interactive games and spontaneous conversations provide a more authentic and less stressful way to assess language skills for elementary students. These methods allow students to use the language in a natural, interactive setting, promoting active participation and reducing anxiety assoc...

Re: am I too old?
You're correct that some countries, especially in Asia, may have stricter age limits for obtaining work permits for teaching positions, which can pose challenges for older individuals seeking employment in these regions. In Asia, the retirement age in the government is 55-60 years old.

Re: Teaching salary in China
Keep in mind that teaching positions in larger cities often come with higher salaries, but living costs are also higher. To save 2000 euros (approximately 16,000 RMB) per month, you would need to earn a gross monthly income of at least 22,000 to 26,000 RMB, accounting for taxes and other deductions.

Re: queen word for bed or bedding
The term "queen-size" was likely used to imply a larger and more spacious bed fit for royalty. Similarly, "king-size" implies even more space and opulence than a queen-size bed. It suggests a bed that is truly fit for a king, with ample room for rest and relaxation.
