Re: Has anyone ever had success teaching adults to read?

I have had no experience with illiterate adults, but a search on the Internet for "teaching illiterate adults to read" brought up a number of interesting articles.

Re: Teaching idioms

Idioms and verbal phrases that are often idioms are very common in English. There are a lot of books and online lists that purport to list the most common ones or most useful ones or the best ones or . . . .; however, there is one list that is based on solid research. The list by Martinez and Schmit...

Re: Age restrictions

I worked at a university (in a non-teaching capacity) on a contract basis and taught a few individuals privately after I passed the mandatory retirement age. There were no legal or other problems with that. (I am kdammers -- sometimes tefl.net signs me in one way; sometimes the other.)

Re: Get the Bananas - fun interactive game for any topic!

I don't understand this game at all. Maybe for people who play computer games the objective and rules are clear, but I don't see what this has to do with learning English.

Re: Do you use acronyms or abbreviations in business email?

I find it rude or sloppy when I get a business e-mail filled with these shorthands, YKWIM? It's ABTM. On the other hand, there are certain abbreviations and acronyms that it is reasonable to assume everyone knows, e.g., MBA, USA, NASA, UN, and IRS (in the US). Also, within a specific profession ther...

Re: Resident (doctor)-patient scripts

I would be leery of using the whole first script from 'Scrubs,' a show I'm not familiar with. As a native speaker of American English who worked in hospitals, I don't understand it. Maybe with the video included it could be explained to your students. But going into enough depth to do so would also ...

I'll second each of 22englishsam's answers. In addition, you might be asked about cultural mistakes you've made and what you've learned from them. Also, what is the hardest part of ... teaching youngsters, teaching abroad, teaching online, living abroad. What methods do you use; what is your teachin...

Re: What can I do to improve my grammar?

I just thought of another book you might consider: Erica L. Meltzer's The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar. It has a somewhat chatty tone. It covers the basics but also more advanced topics. If you do buy this book, be sure to get the errata list (I think it's at Meltzer's home-page). And note the foll...

Re: What can I do to improve my grammar?

Greetings: I can recommend four resources in particular. One is https://owl.purdue.edu/. This portal gives advice on lots of individual grammar topics and also has exercises to match. The other is a book: English for Everyone . This book is also available for free online. The book goes through indiv...

Re: First Time Teaching Business English. Need Advice

Run, don't walk, to the nearest bookstore and buy Market Leader . Get both the textbook and the workbook. Have your students do the same. It's not perfect, but it is good. Also, look at Linguahouse, which has a lot of both free and for-pay lesson plans in business English, but I don't think they hav...

Resources

There are myriad resources for grammar. Some are good, and some are not so good. Here are some I have found useful. English for Everyone. is a grammar book that is also available online as a free download. It is arranged by tenses, followed by other, specific topics. This means that the units have c...

Re: 90% of TEFL teachers in Japan China and Korea have illegal contracts and cheating themselves

"Try this...http://koreabridge.net/discussion/90-ex ... gal-contra" The text doesn't support the headline. There is no information about where the people answering this survey by ETA (Who is that?), and the only link is to something about China, not Asia in general or the other two named c...

Re: Mongolia

Yes, winters are cold in Mongolia, but I think it is the applicant's responsibility to find out such basic things as climate. Going to Ulaanbaatar without knowing about its winters is like going to Kuwait City or Madrid without knowing about their terribly hot summers. There are certain things that ...
