TEACHING ENGLISH IN RUSSIA - SOME SCAMS TO BE AWARE OF
I should prefix this by saying that in 2 years in the Russian Federation I have met many, many lovely, honest, kind, gentle people. However. However. It seems that amongst the management of language schools there is a tendency to be dishonest. Well; maybe I've had bad luck - but 3 out of 3 schools m...

Re: Online TELF no degree
Hi This is some time after your post so you may not see it but... I teach online and I don't have a degree. I do have the CELTA and quite a lot of professional experience. I think CELTA may be better than at least some other general TEFL courses. I don't know if the online schools would require a de...

Beware... Beware
I don't know anything about Dave's ESL Café. But I was quite surprised when I was scammed by a job advert on another well-known TEFL site. I sent them details of the scam. They asked me to send them a copy of the (dodgy) contract which I did. I assumed this meant they were taking the matter seriousl...

Can someone explain this grammar?
I’m thinking about how Constable must have felt when painting the Haywain. This was a fill the gap exercise I gave my students. Both verbs had to be completed. Some students wrote: I’m thinking about how Constable must have felt when he was painting the Haywain. But some students omitted the 'he was...

Police Check in Russia
For applying to jobs in teaching in the UK you nowadays get asked to provide a police check / Certificate of Good Conduct from abroad if your last employment was abroad.
Does anyone know what I would need to do in Russia? Has anyone done this? What would I ask for?
Thanks

Teaching phonemics
Does anyone ever teach the phonemic sounds in the English language directly? - As in we sit down and practice all the sounds - and learn their inscription? Is this more suitable for some nationalities esp. those with a different phoneme set? So far I only ever focus on a phonemic sound when it comes...

Re: I really need some guidance
This school in Russia is looking for a teacher right now: glossologus.ru
(Not recommending it either way - I just know they have a vacancy).
I agree with the other posters - the CELTA may be a better qualification for the UK.

Re: Is there a way to quit graciously with short notice?
Yes; refer to the contract for notice period. As to email or verbally - you probably need to put it in an email at some point so that is one way. If you're not looking forward to the conversation this can be one way of making it easier of course. Why do you want to leave with short notice? Can you n...

Re: Using TEFL and an IT diploma
Sam - my experience is that a degree is not required. However; in my case I have been able to point to a long professional career (in IT) and I think that helps. I would therefore emphasise any professional experience you have when you make applications. But, basically, Joe is correct many employers...
