Thanks for the input Alex but I went with the idea I proposed initially with a minor tweak and was offered the position. So I'll be heading to Japan at some point. =) Just awaiting confirmation.
I'll probably be checking in on this board when I start generating lesson content.

Re: Teaching Demo
Thanks for that. I reckon it would be useful to get them to act out the gestures as well but I was told by someone else that launching directly into them doing gestures would excite them too much that they would cease to want to speak the vocab. This person actually worked for the company I'm applyi...

Re: Teaching Demo
It's just a teaching demo. I'll be "teaching" the interviewer who's going to pretend she's 3 - 5 years old. I've narrowed everything down now. I'm still gonna stick to body parts. I intend to start off with a flashcard introduction - each card without and then with an indication of where t...

Teaching Demo
Hi guys. I have an interview coming up and as part of the interview, I'm required to do a 5 minute teaching demo for 3 - 5 year olds. I unfortunately, have no experience with children so I'm a bit unsure what to do. I have two ideas - actions or body parts but I'm not sure which one to execute. For ...

Re: Racial bais
I strongly disagree with Susan. As a black woman myself (also, from the UK) searching for a job overseas, I have come across countless black women who are currently working in China. If you want more insight into this topic, join the group "Women of Colour Living Abroad" on facebook. There...

Re: ESL Course from Scratch
I'm from the UK. My company is a training and employment company so we do courses already. Now that I think about it, it would probably be for both. A lot of the people who walk through our doors can speak some English though, but to be on the safe side, I'd rather generate a course for complete beg...

ESL Course from Scratch
So, I work for a training and employment company in a very multi-lingual area. As such, it isn't common for people to come in off the street and as if we run English course. We don't. I am, however, a recently qualified English teacher and my boss considered that I could run a beginner course in hou...

Skype?
Hi guys. I'm used to teaching a group of students and I'm used to teaching one to one now, but I haven't a clue how I might teach a one to one lesson over skype. I have a job interview that requires a 30 minute teaching demo. I'm pretty sure I won't be allowed to email any materials over beforehand,...

Re: CCQs
Even though you're assuming that they know what a "date" is, still CCQ it anyway, just in case. I don't know where you're students are from, but if they're a multi-lingual class, then every little helps. The questions you have there are fine to be honest. I don't know if you need a lot of ...

Lesson Planning Cryout
I've been up since 9:30am this morning attempting to rack my brains about what and how I should teach a class of pre-intermediate's prepositions of place. I am at my wits end. I really don't know what to do. I feel even more upset about this than I do nervous about actually teaching and it's driving...

Re: Teaching Practice Nerves
That's the thing. I've heard that my course director, while a funny guy, is also, a bit of a straight talker (he doesn't sugar coat) - which I do respect, as I see myself as a straight talker also. I also, know that I'm liable to take certain things to heart - not in the aggressive manner, but in th...

Re: Teaching Practice Nerves
A lot of people have told me that the first TP is always the worst (in terms of nerves) but after that you want to do it again and again and again. I'm hoping this is the case for me. I'm not the type of person who wants to fail and very much doubt I'm on par with that Canadian woman. I do think I m...

Re: Teaching How To Write
I would think that it would be easier to teach writing in European countries, however, as the alphabets are similar. But teaching in the Far East, for example, would probably be a lot different as their written language is very different from English. And in the video, the children who I mentioned w...

Re: Help for interview!!
I'm at the beginning of my teaching journey but I did find this . Dunno if it'll be much help to you as I'm sure you've researched stuff already. One thing that the guy in the videos does say which really stuck with me is that you can't expect this age group to learn things straight away as their pr...

Teaching Practice Nerves
So after successfully completing the pre-course interview, I have been accepted onto the Cert. TESOL course. I'm very happy and I'm determined to do it, complete it and get my qualification, but the only thing that makes me nervous is the Teaching Practice. I am quite nervous about it so I was wonde...

Re: Small Adult Intermediate Class-HELP!
I wonder - could you not suggest you mix the groups up when you do group work. You are the teacher after all and even if you feel that these two particular students don't have respect for you, you are the English teacher and you will always have that over them. Fundamentally, the class should be fun...

Re: Young TEFL teachers accepted ?
When I first started doing research on TEFL in general - I came across this site as well. I was going to go for it and then a friend recommended that I might want to look into things a bit more. In my opinion, what I've realised with company's like UK - TEFL is that while they may present job opport...

Re: Taster classes?
I went to a Taster Day with TEFL Lab. It was a day course and cost me around £59 (which they deduct off of the main TESOL course if you decide to train with them). They also, offer a weekend introduction course as well and because I was the only one to attend that particular TEFL Taster Day, the tea...
