Re: Grammarly

My initial comment was not intended to dismiss Grammarly or its use. Rather, it was meant to be a humorous warning about Grammarly and other writing assistants, AI-related or not. I occasionally talk to my students about Grammarly and suggest that they use . . . after they have learned correct gramm...

Okay, I got the emulator, but now what? I typed in "Phrasal Nerds," but none of the games that show has that name.

Re: Spanish interference with proper English message transfer.

Here is an unconventional trick that a learner can use if willing: put a rubber band around your wrist. Any time you find yourself making the given mistake, snap the rubber band. A few of my adult students have used this technique. (I want to be clear that the only person who may snap the rubber ban...

Re: Online learning discussion

With Artificial Intelligence (AI), it has gone even further. We now have ChatGPT and more (Read https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/ai-tools-that-show-chatgpt-is-just-the-beginning/). On a simpler note, this morning one of my students in an online class was using Google Translate. It was obvious...

Grammarly

Automated grammar and lexical correcting software is a reality. Teachers need to have a reasoned approach to the use of such material, on home-work, during class, and on tests. It is important to be aware of the limitations of said software. Around Christmas time, I often read or assign as a story t...

Are you sure you don't need a visa to work in Spain? I took a quick look at the British government's site on working in Spain, and it seemed to say that a visa would be required (although a work permit but no visa was required for professors). Also, https://rvfinternational.com/learn-more/do-i-need-...

Re: Dissertation project

Ordering "your" dissertation from this company is plagiarism. You are lying if you submit a work written by someone else as your own. On the other hand, it is possible that you could get legitimate help from a company like this -- but dealing with a company that will sell you a completed p...

(This is) Only for students willing to voluntarily use it: The student puts a loose rubber-band around the ono-dominant wrist. Then when-ever s/he omits the subject, s/he snaps the rubber-band, creating a minor irritation. A teacher can help by, e.g., pointing to the wrist when the error is made. I ...

Re: Qualified primary school teacher - move abroad?

I mostly taught in colleges or universities and institutes when I taught abroad, but I can definitely say I enjoyed teaching in Germany, Mongolia, Korea and Kazakhstan. Each has its own particular allure. When You apply, be sure to stress that You have Your nationally recognized qualifications. When...

online learning and teaching I did undergraduate and graduate work in-person. I also tried a MOOC to learn Python, and was extremely frustrated and dissatisfied (maybe part of the problem was that were hundreds or thousands of people taking the course and the TAs simply didn't care. It was worse tha...

This might appear a little off-topic, but i think it speaks to the theme"in a general way. . . . When I teach EFL teachers, one of my lessons consists of breaking the class into two groups and giving each group a different task. One group is given the word "game" and the other the wor...

Re: rules for "I'm" versus "I am"

I'm ( ;~} ) just thinking off the top of my head here, but here's an idea. "Able" is a predicate adjective, whereas "now" is an adverb (?) here. So, in a sense, "I am now" is saying "I am" plus some detail about my being. In other words, it has a sense of just...

We don't use "I'm" at the end of a sentence. For example, "Are you sick"? - "Yes, I am." /*"Yes, I'm."

Re: queen word for bed or bedding

Just off the top of my head: These terms come from "king-sized" / "king-size." They simply mean large. For beds, a term was needed that indicated something larger than a double bed was needed because larger beds were built. "King" has the cachet of greatness, which equa...

Re: Seeking teachers and schools to trial this platform, or just feedback on site

The original post was not visible on my screen. Now I have gone to the site. I am confused. I tried to type in answers, but I couldn't. Mousing over the initial letter did nothing; only by chance did I find out that the mouse-over has to be in the space after the initial letter. When I went to the c...

Re: Age restrictions

Private Kazakhstan language institutes hire people at least into their seventies. As far as I know, there is no age limitation in the country in general. Mongolia is another country where ageism does not seem to exist (I got hired there when i was over 65). Mexico and the U.S. have laws against age ...
